I have had some problems with a SATA III ssd not working with a junky AMD3 SATA II board, but you should be fine. Your board may not even support AHCI, but many boards made within the past three years do. As far as incompatibility goes, I doubt you'd have a problem with an Intel board. Look in the BIOS options or the manuals to see if it has an AHCI switch. Most of my boards have an IDE/AHCI toggle. My 2008 Dell Latitude laptop has AHCI in the BIOS and it's an 965 chipset.

You're treating WIndows 7 likes it's Windows XP. it's not.

The page file may or may not be needed. You can reduce the size to something like 500 1000MB if you don't want to disable it.

He currently has one SATA HDD, and we'll also be upgrading him from XP to Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, so we'll do a completely new install. He wants to use the SSD as a boot disk and for certain choice games and then keep the HDD for everything else (I plan to use the instructions in the "SSD advice: using junctions to move games/applications" thread to split Steam games). He has a Gigabyte GA EP45 DS3L.

installed AHCI drivers. After doing that, than you reboot with AHCI selected? I really thought that is how you HAD to do it.

I recommend that you a) reduce or remove the swap file b)disable hibernation and c)disable restore points.

I have two HDDs currently, one IDE (boot) and one SATA. I'd like to do the same thing, essentially: SSD as boot drive w/some games, SATA HDD Nike Sweater Zipper for rest. I'll probably let the IDE HDD collect dust, since I don't need the storage space. I already have Win 7 Pro 64 bit on my IDE boot drive, but I don't mind doing a clean install since most of my big stuff is on the SATA drive and I hear Windows installs lightning fast on SSDs anyway. I'd like to leave the SATA HDD untouched (except for the games I'll move over). I'm using a Gigabyte GA P35 DS3L (rev. 2.0).

As my Christmas present to myself, I'd like to get a Corsair Force Series 3 120GB, which is on sale for $139.99 after MIR on TigerDirect. My father's already bought one for himself as well, and he wants me to help him install it when I visit for Christmas. I want to make sure that there won't be any issues with our old motherboards and that I'm aware of any special procedures ahead of time.

A Force 3 will have 111GB of useable space, so you may want to use the above to minimize the amount of data on the drive substantially.

sysprep will clear the image of hardware specific information allowing for any easy transition to new hardware or AHCI

If you're doing a new install, set AHCI first. If you're going to reuse the old Windows install, you must first clone the image to the SSD, then boot from it with IDE enabled. Then, you would have to edit the registry, then reboot and enter the BIOS and THEN select AHCI.

to disable hibernation, open the start menu, type in CMD, right click on it and choose "run as an administrator". Then type in POWERCFG H OFF. Hibernation takes as much space as you have ram, so for 12GB of RAM you'd have a 12GB hibernation file.

Restore points pile up pretty fast and I recommend keeping good backups and just disabling them.

ImageX will file clone the system and clear the swap, hibernate, and restore points before doing so. The OS will dynamically create the pagefile and hiberfil upon deployment of the image.

DON'T install windows in IDE mode, then switch to AHCI later if you can help it. It can be done, but that doesn't mean you should.

2) I'll make sure both boards have the latest version of BIOS, but is there any particular reason these SSDs may not work? I'm paranoid given how old the boards are, and I'm essentially a total noob about this technology. The rebate offer ends today, and I don't want to drop the money if there's some incompatibility with my board that I don't know about.

Even if you don't have AHCI, you should still be OK.

So I guess my main questions are:

1) I've read that I need to switch the BIOS to AHCI, and I'm sure I can find simple instructions for this. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure our backup HDDs also still run properly?

windows can survive the swap by running a repair install as well I've found, and sometimes just with the Bootup repair option on the Win 7 install disk

Even if you don't have AHCI, you should still be OK.
