Beyond the drivetrain, XTR components fall into two distinct styles. The lighter cross country style brake get a complete redesign with a new master cylinder configuration, larger ceramic pistons, new resin and metal pad materials as well as titanium or aluminum backplates. The trail oriented brake features Shimano's Servo Wave cam for increased power and utilizes heat dispersing ICE Tech technology that consists of pad mounted cooling fins as well as an aluminum cored rotor. spider. The Ice Tech rotor and pads are said to improve pad life and reduce heat induced fade by 35 percent. Brake and shift levers can be integrated much like SRAM's Matchmaker with a design Shimano calls I Spec.2.
XTR was due for a redesign since its last overhaul four years ago so it comes as little shock that the group is being revamped from the ground up. But Shimano is finally taking the traditionally lightweight cross country focused group into all new territory: the trail category.

Both types utilize Shimano's Dyna Sys drivetrain with ten speed cassette Nike Pants Grey (5 Ti cogs now instead of 4), Shadow type rear derailleurs (designed to tuck under the chainstay to prevent hanging up), directional chain, shifters and either close ratio triple or double chainring crankset.
